Masonite Architectural Publishes One of North America’s First Wood Door Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
Masonite Architectural, doing business under the brands of Algoma™, Marshfield®, Mohawk®, Harring™ and Baillargeon™, published an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its wood door products, bringing greater environmental transparency to the wood door production process. SCS Global Services (SCS), an international leader in third-party environmental certification, conducted the independent assessment underlying the declaration.
An EPD is an objective report based on life cycle assessment (LCA) that states what a product is made of and how it impacts the environment. With the demand for environmental transparency and raw materials disclosure continuing to grow in the green building industry, EPDs are a valuable tool to communicate information about the potential environmental and human health impacts of a product. Masonite Architectural’s wood door EPD documents environmental impacts from the time raw materials are extracted from the earth through the entire manufacturing process to the finished product, encompassing operations at seven separate production facilities.
“This EPD is one more tool for sharing our environmental performance with our customers,” said Judy Landwehr, Product Manager for Masonite Architectural. “Masonite Architectural has had a longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility and continuous improvement.”
Masonite Architectural’s EPD is part of the company’s larger sustainability program. The company has earned several environmental certifications for its doors, including SCS Indoor Advantage Gold for meeting stringent indoor air quality standards, recycled content certification, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification. Its products also qualify for numerous LEED v4 and other green building program credits.
The completed EPD, which includes almost all of Masonite Architectural’s products, can be viewed on Masonite Architectural’s website (www.masonitearchitectural.com), along with a description of its enduring commitment to environmental responsibility, dating back to the company’s founding nearly a century ago.
